Sand-filled and sand-dressed surfaces are popular with clubs and private owners who want the playing feel of a grass tennis court with greater durability and lower maintenance than natural turf. Sand-filled surfaces have sand worked fully into the pile; sand-dressed surfaces carry a lighter dressing across the top, leaving more fibre exposed for a faster game.
Both perform well across a wide range of weather conditions and age well when properly maintained. Without regular attention, the sand infill compacts, drainage slows and the pile begins to mat - which changes how the ball bounces and makes the surface harder to play on. Catching these signs early keeps the cost of intervention low.
Artiifcial grass tennis courts are popular for private owners, club/community level and schools. Typical pile height is 18-24mm and the surface is either filled or dressed with fine silica sand.

Drag brushing - a regular mechanical brush-over that keeps the grass fibres standing upright and the sand infill level - is the most important routine task for artificial grass tennis surfaces. Without it, the pile flattens, infill migrates to the edges and drainage begins to slow. On courts in regular club or school use, we recommend brushing frequently.
We also carry out de-compaction - a mechanical process that loosens compacted infill so water can drain freely again - and infill filtration, which removes and cleans contaminated sand that builds up over time. Together, these treatments restore playing quality and can extend surface life by as much as 50% compared with an unmanaged court.

When routine maintenance is no longer enough to restore consistent playing quality - because the infill has broken down, the pile has matted or drainage has become seriously compromised - rejuvenation is the right next step. Artificial clay courts use a synthetic carpet with a sand infill to replicate the playing characteristics of natural clay - a slower ball speed, a higher bounce and a more comfortable, cushioned feel underfoot. They offer the advantages of real clay without the intensive daily maintenance that natural clay demands. They can be used all year round, in all weathers, and can be coloured to look like the genuine article.
For clubs that want members to benefit from clay-court play without the groundskeeping overhead, artificial clay is a practical and durable option. The surface does need regular brushing and periodic infill attention to maintain consistent performance - but the management burden is far lower than for a natural clay surface.
