Hockey Pitch Cleaning,
Maintenance & Installation

Regular maintenance, cleaning, part rejuvenation, full rejuvenation, re-lining and repairs

With regular maintenance, common problems on these surfaces can be solved.

Common Surface Problems

These are popular for club/community level and for schools and offer a fast game with ‘even’ cushioning for the ball. Typical pile height is 18-24mm and the surface is filled with silica sand. This surface can become contaminated and very compacted leading to a slippery, dangerous surface that is prone to flooding.

Regular Pitch Maintenance

A regular maintenance programme is recommended from new as this will allow your surface to outlast manufacturers warranties by as much as 50% and ensures good playability throughout the year. Maintenance programmes include surface debris collection, de-compaction, infill filtration and chemical treatment.

Part Rejuvenation

Highly Cost Effective solution involving partial infill replacement that will ensure an extended life for previously un-maintained older surfaces.

Pitch Repair

Over time seams can begin to fail and need to be repaired or patched urgently. After the repair, turf is graded to match the current pile height of the pitch to ensure even ball roll and safe quality play.

Full Rejuvenation

Older pitches can often become deeply contaminated as they come to toward the end of their life, the solution is to use a compressed air system to fully remove and replace the infill and can guarantee an extra 4-5 years quality play.

Pitch Re-lining

Pack polyurethane paints to ensure a long lasting, high quality finish.

These are popular for club/community level and for schools and offer a fast game with ‘even’ cushioning for the ball. Typical pile height is 16-20mm (shorter than sand filled) and the surface is filled to 60-80% with silica sand. This surface can become contaminated and very compacted leading to a slippery, dangerous surface that is prone to flooding.

Water-based hockey pitches have an extremely dense, short pile. It is important that they are irrigated and kept continuously wet as the water acts as a wearing factor for the grass and affects playability; as much as the sand in a filled or a dressed pitch does.

Due to the constant spraying with water, these pitches can suffer from lots of algae, moss and mould issues.

Pitch Cleaning

Rotary cleaning heads are used to loosen debris. Water is jetted into the surface and then the contaminated material is sucked up into a tank ready for safe disposal. A regular maintenance programme is recommended from new as this will allow the surface to outlast manufacturers warranties by as much as 50% and ensures good playability throughout the year.

Hockey pitch maintenance

Even though modern artificial grass for field hockey provides a true and reliable surface and requires far less attention than conventional grass, it still needs a degree of artificial grass maintenance to continue to give of its best given the hard use it is put to in what is a high intensity sport - and the varied types of weather it is subject to.

Experienced professionals

Entrusting detailed maintenance to experts such as ourselves can prolong the life of your hockey pitch installation.

For example, specialised hockey pitch chemical treatment can help keep organic growth such as weeds and moss at bay, our specialist deep cleaning machinery removes the more obstinate debris that could linger and cause wear problems on your artificial grass hockey fields - and we can soften surfaces hardened up over time through the compacting of the infill material.

A planned hockey pitch maintenance schedule drawn up by our experts to suit your requirements in terms of usage, positioning of your pitches and weather tendencies (for example, more extremes of cold or wetter conditions in certain parts of the UK) would influence how often and how much care is given to your pitches - and would also inform your choice of what is the best artificial grass for hockey installation for your needs if starting afresh.

Hockey pitch repairs

Although our hockey pitch astroturf is leading edge in terms of durability and toughness, repairs may occasionally be necessary: for example, if inappropriate footwear has been used on it resulting in a tear or, as can happen over time, seams wear and begin to split.

Repair expertise

Repairing a tear the correct way is important to ensure the area still provides a true surface and the repair lasts: we can ensure spot hockey pitch repairs are undertaken in the appropriate way with replacement sections of turf carefully matching the existing surface and pile height to ensure consistent ball roll.

Hockey pitch rejuvenation

Over time the infill used in some pitches becomes contaminated, so we either fully or partially replace the infill usually using a compressed air system. The compressed air removes the contaminated top layer of sand infill, restores the ‘pile’ of the grass (similar to a carpet pile) before new sand is added.

A full or partial infill replacement can be undertaken depending on the severity of the contamination: if required, the infill can be removed as far as the backing and - once done - will improve drainage and performance. This process can often prolong the life of the pitch by a good four or five years so reducing your hockey pitch costs further.

Artificial grass for hockey options

Sand dressed, sand filled or water based are the most common artificial grass for hockey fields solutions.

What type you choose would depend on various factors such as usage, playability preferences and budget - and whether you may be looking to use your surface for other sports.

The MUGA option

One popular option we offer is MUGA (Multi Use Gaming Area) which is a shorter pile, sand dressed surface suitable for netball, tennis and five a side football along with hockey. This is an ideal way of making the most of the versatility of modern artificial grass to cater for various sports and  increasing usage of your sport and leisure area.

We are happy to advise on what would provide you with the best artificial grass for hockey solution of the types we install, and draw up a suitable maintenance programme based on your usage.
